Comme des Garçons

The Label

What began as a side business making costumes for styling assignments in Tokyo in the late sixties has morphed into a $150 million fashion empire with over 200 franchises around the globe. With rustic denim womenswear inspired by Japanese peasantry, Rei Kawakubo set up over 100 Comme des Garçons (French for “like some boys”) shops across Japan in the seventies. Then, in 1981, she brought her first collection to Paris. Bathed in black, it featured strong but conflated silhouettes—in crumbled silk, scrubbed cottons, and boiled wools—that honored provocation over fit. The mystery (and the austerity) has continued with Kawakubo’s recent jones for temporary “guerilla” stores, not to mention the work of her protégé Junya Watanabe, who presented his own womenswear line under CDG in 1992, followed by a menswear collection in 2001.
The Look

Though earlier pieces bent the edge of avant-garde—think three-armed jackets, face-shielding turtlenecks, form-fitting gingham numbers stuffed with down bulges in monochrome black—recent collections have been a bit more mainstream with suits hewn from gold- and silver-flecked tweed, Rolling Stone tongue patterns, and floral-motif dresses.
The Designer

Having no formal training as a tailor—she got a degree in “aesthetics,” worked in the ad department for a Japanese textile company, then briefly did a stint as a freelance stylist before founding Comme des Garçons in 1973—Rei Kawakubo has always relied on the ability of patternmakers to interpret her austere design concepts, no small feat considering the 64-year-old iconoclast once thought lace meant hole-ridden sweaters.

Comme des Garçons - Play
The concept of the Comme des Garçons PLAY line is design by not designing. A collection of basic items based on original forms or prototypes. PLAY items are characterised by the iconic heart logo designed by Filip Pagowski, a New York-based artist from Poland. This collection is very popular. You'll start noticing it more. "The heart with the eyes."

Pastelle

Making headlines after his appearance at the AMA’s, Kanye clears the air regarding specifics on the release of his highly anticipated clothing line, Pastelle. Both the jacket seen at the American Music Awards (which he designed less than 3 weeks ago) and the hoody spotted at the Dior show will see a release this coming January as well as a more subtle varsity piece seen here. After much speculation, the kicks he was wearing were officially Louis Vuitton sneakers and once again the Air Yeezy’s are confirmed to drop in March. Definitely another busy month for Kanye.

Play Cloths

We’ve heard plenty about the debut clothing line from the Virginia Beach duo, The Clipse, and now Play Cloths has finally debuted at select boutiques and retailers across the United States. The clothing line is based on the idea of creating high quality pieces of clothing that are adaptable to any lifestyle. The more i see their logo the more i like it. I'm not to fond of the other pieces though. Just the running kid? LOL. Source: Freshnessmag

Gucci Limited Edition Olympic line in China

Gucci has announced a “8-8-2008 Limited Edition” line to commemorate the 2008 Olympic games. The bold red collection was chosen to represent “Happiness” and “Celebration” - two emotions which Gucci found appropriate to describe the excitement in the world of sport. The 8 items in the collection were chosen to mirror the lucky number 8 in Chinese culture.

I-Gucci watch is Gucci’s first ever digital timepiece. Its clean digital face (which features both numerical or clock hand formats), black dial and steel frame. The surface of its red monochrome rubber strap is engraved with the Gucci logo on the exterior, while the interior has been embossed with Gucci’s iconic GG pattern."Source: Play Cloths

Forever 21

NEW YORK — Forever 21 21 will open a 100,000-square-foot store at 1540 Broadway in Times Square in a location previously occupied by Tower Records. A spokeswoman for the trendy apparel chain confirmed the location and store size, but could not provide an opening date.

The company has made no secret of its desire to build larger stores. At an industry event in June, Christopher Lee, senior vice president of Forever 21, said the company will open 90,000-square-foot units in certain locations, making it a potential anchor in shopping malls.

Forever 21, which had sales of $1.3 billion in 2007, is projected to do $1.8 billion in sales this year.

Louis Vuitton x Murakami 5th Ave Store

Louis Vuitton’s flagship store at 5th Ave got a dope make-over for the holidays, the vinyl display of Murakami’s iconic Monogram Multicolore print wraps around the building with neon lights shining through the windows. I’m not exactly sure where Murakami signed but the display is simply amazing! If you’re in New York you should definitely make a trip to see it in person. If not here’s a closer look at the “wrapped up” Louis Vuitton store.

Nike Womens Dunk High x Married to the Mob

I have no idea if you've seen these yet! So if you haven't here you go! :)
Nike and Married to the Mob has joined forces to create a dope new collaboration Dunk High for the ladies. The collaboration is definitely a classy piece and aligns very much with the MOB brand and attitude. The upper of the sneakers take on a luxurious theme with inspiration from the Chanel tweed jackets on the back half the sneakers. On the front half the Dunk feature a very shiny black patent leather also a nod to Chanel and their flats with patent leather toe tips. The collaboration details includes the Married to the Mob tongue label, a shiny gold MOB detail on the upper heel and on the laces, a MOB lace lock. This collaboration is scheduled to drop at Tier-0 accounts only.
